With about 1,000 dolmens, Aveyron is the most populated department in France! Far ahead of Morbihan and its 550 Breton megaliths (including dolmens and menhirs).
Another erroneous belief is that the dolmens were erected by the Celts. Not true! They were built by the Neolithic populations between the end of the 5th and the 3rd millennium BC.
The dolmens, which in Breton means "stone table", would have served as collective burials for up to a hundred people.
