When gastronomy rhymes with bicycle touring at Pays du Roquefort! Let yourself be tempted by our Brebis’Cyclette and its taste breaks throughout 47 km (or 61 km depending on the option chosen). A short day, in sports or family mode with electrical bike, whichever the option chosen, a tasteful route!
Step 1 – Gourmet break at Roquefort.
Here we go for a ride on the theme of love of good food! After a short crossing of the city of Saint-Affrique, follow the shady route of the walking and cycling path (V85), lovely bucolic track, to Saint-Jean d’Alcapiès, at the bottom of the Col des Aiguières, for the first climb of the day.
The route continues here towards Roquefort, King of Cheese’s original village where a visit to many maturing cellars will quench visitors’ curiosity and delight their taste buds.
From the largest to the smallest, from the most famous to the most traditional, from the open visit to the guided tour, there is something for every taste. Whichever your choice, you will not avoid the unmissable tasting of various range of Roquefort, accompanied by a few tips on how to prepare this jewel of France’s gastronomic heritage!
Step 2 – Saint-Jean d’Alcas and its narrow streets steeped in history.
After a well-deserved taste break and a passage by Tourenemire, heading for the Cistercian village of Saint-Jean d’Alcas, with “le Fort des Dames”, real medieval treasure taking centre stage at the heart of the city.
The village nestles in the heart of an authentic and unspoiled landscape, far from the tourist crowds.
Let yourself be charmed by this place and discover its valuable history. The fort is the demonstration of the influence of the Cistercian order on a European scale. Cistercian abbeys took over the management of agriculture in the countryside.
Wandering in the street, you will live an immersion in the past that will leave you with a feeling of fulfilment and sweetness of life.
Step 3 – A savoir-faire handed down from generation to generation.
Keep up discoveries with Alexandre, a breeder at heart, and Emilie, a seeker of meaning, have been picked up the family torch that has kept the Alcas Farm for over 5 generations. They look after 300 ewes which produced a certified organic and Demeter milk. This milk, so carefully harvested, is partly delivered to the Société company to produce Roquefort, and for the rest, it is transformed into cheese at the farm: the Bleu d’Alcas as well as yogurts in a wide range of flavours, that make those biodynamic producers well-known, well beyond the Aveyron department.
Proud of this savoir-faire, they share their passion by offering you a warm welcome and a one-hour tour of their farm. Through a photography exhibition that recount the steps of the production of a yogurt and a cheese, their work and the biodynamic farming particularities will no longer hold any secret!
At the end of the visit, it is the gourmet time with the tasting of their ewes’ unpasteurised cheese, their yogurts, or their jam. Your surely come away with a different perspective on agriculture and the living world.
Step 4 – Like a longing for wide open spaces
Explore the wild stretches by wandering the Avants-Causses. The boxwood moorland landscapes are typical of agropastoralism “Bien Causses” and “Cévennes” registered by UNESCO. Put your foot down at Mascroube Farm, also known as “La Borie du Commandeur”, the time to admire the architecture of the well-preserved buildings, organised around a vast rectangular courtyard.
Then, start the winding descent towards the Sorgues Valley and enjoy the thrill of the ride all the way to Saint-Félix-de-Sorgues, former county town of a major commandery of the Hospitallers of the Order of Saint-Jean of Jerusalem.
Finish the last few kilometres riding along the meanders of the Sorgues river to Saint-Affrique.
Step 5 – Relaxation time
Comfort after effort and what is better than reach the Cap Vert Hotel, certified Les Bonnes Adresses à Vélo! Guaranteed fun and relaxation by the pool. Regain your strength in the kitchen: local flavours with Roquefort accents in a trendy setting or on the terrace by the pool or in the park – it is your choice!
